I was just reading about Inkling (http://www.inkling.com/about/), a startup that just came out of stealth mode after the iPad release, and really look forward to the product (though I'd be more excited about it if I were still a student). I think it goes along with the ideas you present here. Inkling obsoletes traditional textbooks by providing a modular, interactive mode for learning traditional textbook material.

In addition, I remember how heavy textbooks can be and so just the simple fact that this is designed for mobile systems is a nice benefit.

I agree that you'll generally know what you do, but it's a bit tougher when you enter an interdisciplinary field where you may have irregular usage of an extremely broad range of material. This is where tools for knowledge maintenance (or at least rapid, streamlined re-acquisition) would be great.

I actually just came across an article (http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2009/12/28/c...) describing some efforts to implement some of these concepts at the Carnegie Mellon Open Learning Initiative (http://oli.web.cmu.edu/openlearning/). It looks pretty interesting.

I enjoyed reading this. The forgetfulness phenomenon you mention is what led me to a conclusion that: "You know what you do." I desperately wish I could remember everything I've ever learned. Though the good side of it is, I can experience the joy of learning again, even if it is for a second time. :-)
